The Morillon Pinot Noir is sourced from 0.4 hectare within the oldest Pinot Noir block (0.6 hectare) at Port Phillip Estate’s Red Hill vineyard. This block was planted in 1987 on a site nestled among folds of the hilly country in Red Hill. The iron and magnesium-rich but otherwise weathered basalts confer a savoury, earthy minerality to the wine. With maturity, the original block consistently produces wine with an extra level of structure, balance and intensity. In light of this we bottle a small portion separately as the ultimate expression of Pinot Noir from this vineyard.
Aromatically expressive and finely detailed, the 2025 Morillon Pinot Noir opens with notes of crushed strawberry, raspberry and pomegranate. Beneath the vibrant red fruit lies a subtle savoury complexity of fresh herbs, brown spice and earthy undertones, lending depth and a strong sense of site. The palate is poised and refined, with red cherry and cranberry fruit flowing along a framework of fine, savoury tannins. Bright natural acidity brings energy and precision, driving the wine through a long and persistent finish. Balancing vibrancy with depth, this Pinot Noir is both immediately engaging and structured for graceful development in the cellar.

There is something truly special about older vines grown in good places that seem to almost effortlessly produce stunning flavours. Year after year, Morillon – sourced from some of the maker’s oldest pinot vines and grown on iron and magnesium-rich soils on the Mornington Peninsula – shows a sense of class in the glass. Here, in 2025 we see a sour cherry light savouriness contributing an added layer of flavour with a heavy accent of wild herbs. Delightful! The more you look, the more you see and taste. Aromas are wild in saltbush, garrique – a real maritime feel – mixing with cherry, cranberry, fennel seed, caraway, earth and dusty cocoa. The palate opens beautifully fresh and alive, there is energy to burn in this youngster – a good sign. Fine tannins and a nice drive of juicy acidity aid the flow of cherry and red berries, wild herbs with hints of saltbush and a light savouriness that is warmly embraced on the long finish. Do you dare to drink now or wait? That is the question and only you can answer it. Either way, this is a cracker of a pinot noir.

This is from a 0.4 hectare parcel from the oldest block PPE has on Red Hill, planted 1987. Gets 10% whole bunch and 16% new oak. Red fruit, cherry, hazelnut and spice, red flowers and mint. It’s light to medium-bodied with peppery pumice stone tannin offering firm but fine grip, strawberry and spice carrying on a finish of excellent length, some roasted red capsicum sweetness in the aftertaste. It’s a distinct wine, and I like it very much.

The Port Phillip Estate vineyard is located on the Mornington Peninsula at Red Hill, on Eocene volcanic soils. Our wines are made from domain grown, handpicked grapes and aim to manifest terroir: the integration of our geology and soils with the macroclimate of our region, the mesoclimates of the various sites within our vineyard and the weather of the annual grape growing season. Our cultural operations in the vineyard and practices in the winery endeavour to articulate these unique characteristics diligently, respectfully and without artifice.
