This single-block wine is sourced from just 0.7 ha of 26-year-old gently sloping Chardonnay vines within the 2.76 ha Farrago block. The mottled appearance of the clay soil in the Farrago block is caused by a high percentage of ironstone pebbles, much like the Ferrous vineyard. This siliceous influence helps infuse the resulting wines with linearity and minerality.
Aromas of pink grapefruit and mandarin pith rise from the glass, layered with notes of buttered pastry, fresh dough, exotic spice and delicate white flowers. Flecks of flint, sea spray and subtle oak add nuance and complexity, lending further intrigue to the bouquet.
The palate is vibrant and expressive, driven by concentrated citrus fruit and layers of crisp apple and white peach. A generous mid-palate unfolds with mealy texture and finely integrated phenolics, bringing both depth and structure. Bright acidity is seamlessly woven through the wine, providing energy, precision and a strong sense of line. The finish is long, saline and persistent, carrying impressive flavour intensity and mineral detail.
While entering its drinking window now this wine can be enjoyed with medium to long term cellaring.

The single-block chardonnays are some of my favourites, and here nothing is out of place, ready to drink or pop away to build more detail. Plenty of substance, though, all citrus and white stone fruit, soursob, creamy cashew lees aromas and flavours with a touch of spicy oak. Intense and finely tuned, this is moreish, almost thirst-quenching, thanks to the acidity. A super wine.

Mid-straw, bright and lively in the glass. There’s some lovely lifted aromas of grapefruit pith, white flower, struck match, melon, just-ripe white stone fruit and grilled nuts. Textured, mouth-filling, layered and with a very smart drive of stone fruit, pithy citrus, a lick of complexing oak and some grippy phenolics. The length and presence are mightily impressive.

The scent of jacaranda blossom after a storm, of marmalade from bitter oranges simmering on the stove. Mineral-riven fruit creating a sense of stern structure spliced into horizontals and verticals with subterranean depth. Whereas Faultline, in 2024 at least, seems to have its face to the sun, Farrago looks to the stones. But I can taste, too, the creaminess of oatmeal and toasted hemp hearts. And white peaches. It might be chiselled, but it’s far from a hard-hearted wine.

Juicy and substantial and delicious to drink. It tastes of stone fruit, cedarwood, woodsmoke and tonic water, with a creamy vanilla aspect hovering throughout, the hover particularly apparent on the nose. Everything here is done satisfyingly and well. There’s a steely almost makrut-lime leaf character through the aftertaste, pleasingly. Lovely wine. Gold medal standard.

Maybe it’s the high percentage of ironstone in the soil of the Farrago block, but there is something quite mineral and effortlessly bright about this wine. Ripe stone fruits, citrus, lime, spring flowers and white florals to the aroma intertwined with baked bread, biscuit scents, almond meal and nutty hazelnut. That lovely nuttiness continues on the palate leading into layers of white peach, nectarine intensity with a lively citrus freshness and some deeper leesy, bready notes with biscotti. Beautifully composed, compact and assured and so fresh with a lively acidity in constant play.

The Kooyong vineyard is located on the Mornington Peninsula at Tuerong, on Miocene sedimentary soils. Our wines are made from domain grown, handpicked grapes and aim to manifest terroir: the integration of our geology and soils with the macroclimate of our region, the mesoclimates of the various sites within our vineyard and the weather of the annual grape growing season. Our cultural operations in the vineyard and practices in the winery endeavour to articulate these unique characteristics diligently, respectfully and without artifice.
