Tasting Profile

September 2018

Guava, lemon peel, dill and fresh cut pineapple on the nose. Hints of juiciness on the palate, otherwise it is full of grapefruit pith and the drying structural elements we see from our Red Hill property. The finish is long and focused.

James Halliday Australian Wine Companion 2020

Light straw and bright. Very much in fume in style. Hints of reduction and flint, then passionfruit, greengage and salad greens. Almost into musk. And its textural, powerful and rich too, with just enough white stone fruit phenolic crunch to hold it all together.

The Wine Front, December 2018

This has been on an excellent run of form and it continues here. It’s all about power, and texture. Once you have the power, you build the texture. Tropical fruit, passionfruit, guava, lemongrass, even grapefruit; all such flavours blink through the palate. It also has a gravelly, smoky edge, which is entirely a positive. This wine saw some old wood, and it did it some good. Excellent white wine.

The Vintage

Following a wet Winter, budburst commenced relatively late in mid September. The Winter rainfall set up the vineyards well for Spring with overall temperatures during Spring slightly higher than average accompanied by below average rainfall. Flowering commenced mid late November with ideal weather conditions, resulting in one of the best fruit sets in many years. The mild to warm conditions continued throughout Summer and veraison commenced in mid January. Harvest delivered fruitful crop loads matched with very stable weather conditions, ensuring vine performance and good ripeness. Picking commenced late February and the viticultural team worked steadily until the beginning of April delivering outstanding fruit. The white wines display excellent acidity, depth and intense fruit flavours. The red wines look poised and elegant with powerful aromatics and a great balance between tannin and acid.

The Vineyard

The Port Phillip Estate Sauvignon is a single site wine produced from 0.65 hectares of estate vineyard. The fruit was whole bunch pressed and fermented without yeast inoculation in old French oak barriques. Once dry, the wine was left sur lie for several months prior to bottling. The wine was bottled without fining and with minimal filtration.
